About This Item

The prolific artist and author Edward Gorey (American, 1925–2000) created more than one hundred works, including a wealth of droll, darkly humorous books that brought to the world a new genre in graphic storytelling: the sprightly disturbing. Yet he is equally admired for his many bright and whimsical drawings and stories. The images on these holiday cards—off-kilter illustrations of Yuletide mayhem for John Updike's wryly jaundiced text The Twelve Terrors of Christmas (Pomegranate, 2006)—exhibit both sides of Gorey. The scenes are replete with the usual icons of Christmas cheer, but wait: Santa looks a little worrisome, the elves might be guilty of child endangerment, and, I say, is that tree staring back at me?
