About This Item

In Boston, a gold grasshopper is an iconic symbol. A gilded grasshopper was made by Shem Drowne in 1742 and given as a gift to Peter Faneuil, who placed it on top of Faneuil Hall, a place also referred to as "The Cradle of Liberty". Faneuil Hall became a meeting place for patriots and protesters who later sparked the beginning of the American Revolution. The grasshopper figure is believed to be modeled after London's Royal Exchange. The grasshopper, along with Faneuil Hall's dome, was gilded in gold.

Gold plated.
