About This Item

This textile design of this tie is a replication of a Japanese postcard in the Leonard Lauder collection. The original art is entitled Record of New Artists in the Meiji Era from Ehagaki Sekai. At the turn of the century the newly introduced medium of the postcard quickly replaced the traditional Japanese woodblock print as the favored tableau for contemporary images. Several of Japan's leading graphic artists found the Western postcard format ideal for exploring new artistic styles such as Art Nouveau and Art Deco. In March 2002 Leonard A. Lauder donated his collection of more than twenty thousand Japanese postcards to the Museum of Fine Arts. These works largely date from the early twentieth century to the years just before World War Two and represent an astonishing array of subjects and styles.
