About This Item

The maple leaf pattern on this beautiful silk scarf was taken from Claude Monet's (French, 1840-1926) La Japonaise, 1876. The painting was of his first wife, Camille Monet, as she was dressed in an ornate Japanese costume, wearing a wig. Japanese art and culture was very popular in France in the later half of the 1800s and Japanese items could easily be found in shops and even department stores.
