Claude Monet (1840-1926) was 68 when he first discovered Venice in the fall of 1908. During his 2 month stay, he began some of his most popular works, over 30 paintings in total, which he finished in the next few years after he returned to France. He was fascinated by the city’s architecture and by the light and its reflection on the water and buildings. The brushstrokes shown on this scarf are a detail from Grand Canal, Venice 1908, held in the MFA, Boston’s collection.
