Water as a great natural phenomenon upon which much Japanese life revolved evoked a sense of awe and wonder. As the subjects of many legends and proverbs, creatures of water inhabited a magical world and were believed to possess supernatural powers. They taught humans admirable traits and freely inspired the imagination of netsuke artists.

Tortoises, descendents of dragons, are symbols of longevity. It is said that the bushy-tailed tortoise acquires its tail at the age of ten thousand years.
