Maxfield Parrish (American, 1870–1966) employed a slow, delicate, and labor-intensive technique to achieve the crystalline clarity of his paintings: rather than paint in opaque oils, he built up layers of transparent pigment—a method that led to extraordinary subtlety of palette and, often, to an effect as if the painting were backlit. Among the twelve luminous images in this calendar are Stars, Sunrise, Waterfall, and Ecstasy.
