About This Item

Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was a meticulous and prolific chronicler of early modern Japanese society and culture, creating more than thirty thousand drawings and illustrating over five hundred books. Although he gained renown with the publication of several series, such as Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, the internationally influential yet humble painter and printmaker wrote: “I became an artist, and from fifty on began producing works that won some reputation, but nothing I did before the age of seventy was worthy of attention.” Despite the master’s modesty, his extraordinary work has withstood the test of time—as demonstrated by the twelve exquisite prints reproduced here.
