About This Item

Mark Rothko is associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement, sometimes called the New York School, a circle of painters who emerged during the 1940s as a new collective voice in American art. During a career that spanned five decades, Rothko (American, b. Russia, 1903–1970) developed an innovative and impassioned form of abstract painting characterized by rigorous attention to formal elements such as color, shape, balance, depth, composition, and scale. The twelve luminous Rothko paintings in this calendar are from the collection of the National Gallery of Art.
