About This Item

Carl Larsson (Swedish, 1853–1919) was born into poverty in Stockholm but overcame his dismal childhood through art and the love for his wife, artist Karin Bergöö. The two met in 1882 at an artist’s colony near Paris, where Bergöö encouraged Larsson’s transition from the large-scale allegorical oil paintings he was then creating, to the light-infused water-colors he would become famous for.

In a cottage named Lilla Hyttnäs in Sundborn, Sweden, the couple lavished attention on their eight children, and Larsson delighted in chronicling their comfortable country life. Although he considered his monumental painting Midvinterblot (created for the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm) to be his most important work, he acknowledged that his artistic legacy would be the charming scenes of domestic bliss that rendered him Sweden’s most beloved artist.
