About This Item

Born into a prosperous family, William Morris (English, 1834–1896) left Oxford University to join an architectural firm but turned to the decorative arts after being inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites. In 1861 he formed his own company in London with several of them, including Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones. A principal founder of the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain—which valued handcraftsmanship over manufactured goods—Morris was also a writer of poetry and fiction, a founder of the socialist movement in England, and a designer of typefaces, fabrics, and wallpaper. The gorgeous floral and foliate wallpaper designs in this calendar were selected from sample books of William Morris and Company in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum.
