About This Item

Emily Stoehrer

This books is the first publication to spotlight the Parisian couture house Madeleine & Madeleine (1919-1926). With the aid of previously unpublished drawings and a first person account by Madame Madeleine, this book tells the story of an early 20th century maison renowned, albeit briefly, for its lavish designs and opulent embroideries. It places these previously unknown couturieres-Mademoiselle and Madame Madeleine-alongside other important 20th century women like Jeanne Paquin, Jeanne Lanvin, and Gabrielle Chanel, and secures their place in fashion history. The text provides rare details on the world of haute couture, and the design drawings present a visual feast for scholars and enthusiasts interested in fashions of the early 1920s.

The content of this publication is based largely on the Madeleine & Madeleine Archive of more than 150 original drawings that were recently donated to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston by Jean S. and Frederic A. Sharf.
