About This Item

Giandomenica Romaneilli, ed. Piero Codata & Massimo Venchierutti, photos.

This large visual tour of Venice, illustrated with some 700 color plates, reveals the broad range of artistic production that is still flourishing in the island city and the Veneto region. Originally issued as a two volume set, this combined volume covers Venice from its beginnings through the 19th century. It looks first at the artistic history of Venice, from its beginnings in the Lagoon region to the 16th century. Particular attention is given to the development of mosaic art from its earliest iterations in black and white to the vivid colors of the biblical and historical motifs in the basilica of San Marco. The book then explores the 17th to 19th centuries. A chapter explores the interior decoration of Venetian palaces, while another documents the work of Giambattista Tiepolo, along with his influence on the artists of the rococo style.
