About This Item

John Elderfield & Kasper Monrad

Bob Dylan has been a prolific graphic artist since the 1960s, and his graphic art is marked by the same constant drive for renewal that characterizes his music—constantly experimenting and testing new artistic techniques and expressions. Painted between late 2008 and early 2010, the Brazil Series comprises close to 50 paintings depicting the banal and everyday facets of Brazilian life. Forty of these works were selected by Dylan for exhibition at the National Gallery of Denmark and are reproduced here—many in extreme close-up. In accompanying essays, Kasper Monrad and John Elderfield discuss Dylan's diverse range of subjects, recurring motifs, and artistic influences.
